The climate is one of the natural factors that influence the touring
phenomenon, because of the continuous modification of the landscape
appearance and of the way we perceive it. The lowest annual average
temperatures are on the crests of the Paring Mountains, at over
2500 m height (-2° C). At lower altitudes, of 1000 -1500 m,
the annual average value is 4-6° C, and in the Petrosani Depression
is 7.7° C. During summer these values can reach 16° C
in the Petrosani Depression, 10 -14° C in the lower alpine
area and 6-8° C on the higher peaks. During winter, the temperature
at the top is - 10° C, in the lower alpine area -6,-8°
C and - 4° C in the Petrosani Depression. The Jiu Valley is
an area with cool summers; with maximum temperatures under 3°
C. However, the minimum values are not less than -29° C. The
number of days with snow is of 80 - 85/year in the higher alpine
areas, around 40 days/year in the middle alpine area and 20 -
23 days/year inside the depression. In the Petrosani Depression
the air calmness is about 68% of a year, compared to just 40%
on the mountain peaks.
